How to convert a bank statement to Excel or CSV

A complete walkthrough of FinParse, from opening the tool to downloading your spreadsheet.

  1. 1Open the tool

Go to the converter on the home page. It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop and mobile. You do not need to create an account or install anything.

  2. 2Upload your PDF

Drag your statement onto the upload area, or select Upload Bank Statement to choose the file. The file must be a PDF of up to 100 MB and 150 pages. The file is opened by your browser – it is not sent to a server.

If the PDF is password-protected (common for statements sent by email), you will be asked for the password. It is used only to open the file and is not stored.

  3. 3Wait for processing

A progress bar shows each page being read. Digital statements usually take a few seconds. You can cancel at any time, which discards everything processed so far.

If the PDF only contains images (a scan), you will be offered text recognition (OCR). It runs in your browser, takes around 10–30 seconds per page and processes up to 25 pages.

  4. 4Review the transactions

The results show a summary and the transaction table:

    • Summary – number of transactions, total debit, total credit, and opening and closing balances when the statement states them.
    • Balance check – whether each row’s balance matches the previous balance plus credits minus debits.
    • Rows marked “Review” – rows that failed the balance check, or where the direction of an amount could not be confirmed.
    • Date format – if dates could be day-first or month-first, you can switch the interpretation.

Use search, the “Show” filter, column sorting and pagination to find specific rows.

  5. 5Edit if necessary

Select the pencil icon to edit a row, the bin icon to delete it (with an undo option), or Add to insert a missing transaction. Saving an edited row clears its review marker. Reset changes restores the rows exactly as extracted, and Clear all empties the table.

Tip: compare the closing balance in the summary with your statement. If they match, the extraction is very likely complete.

  6. 6Download Excel or CSV

Select Download Excel for an .xlsx workbook with a Transactions sheet and a Summary sheet, or Download CSV for a UTF-8 file compatible with Excel, Google Sheets and accounting tools. Both include your edits and are created on your device.

When you are done, select Convert another statement or close the tab. This clears the statement data from the page.

If no transactions are found

Some layouts are not recognised yet. Check that the PDF is a statement with a transaction table and that amounts have two decimal places. If it still does not work, you can enter transactions manually and export them, or let us know about the layout (please do not send the statement itself).
